The Best Dog Breeds For Running
While most dogs love to play and be active, it’s no secret that some breeds make better workout partners than others. To help you find your ideal running buddy, here are some of the top breeds for speed, distance and trails.
Short, fast runs
German Shepherd: This breed is built to be out on the farm. They are known for their speed and agility. They can reach speeds up to 30 miles per hour.
Siberian Husky: Huskies are a medium-sized breed with lots of energy and pace.
Rhodesian Ridgeback: Fast and powerful, the Rhodesian Ridgeback’s natural gait makes them perfect running companions.
Short jogs (Less than 3 miles)
Beagles: Beagles are hunting dogs that can cover a lot of ground, but given their small size, they are better suited to shorter jogs rather than long runs.
American Staffordshire Terrier: Another smaller breed, American Staffordshire Terriers have a strong, stocky body that’s perfect for shorter distances.
Jack Russell Terrier: The Jack Russell is a highly active dog that loves being outdoors, making them perfect for shorter jogs.
Longer jogs (10 miles+)
Dalmatian: Dalmatians are strong, active dogs that can easily keep up with long distance runners.
German Shorthaired Pointer: These dogs are great for active owners. Due to their hunting backgrounds, they have strong endurance and can comfortably handle a 10-mile run.
Weimaraner: Born to run, Weimaraners are great either in short bursts or for longer distances of 10 miles+.
Trail running
Border Collie: Bred to be working animals, these dogs can run all day long. They can cover more than 50 miles in a day.
Golden Retriever: Golden Retrievers have a high level of endurance and they are especially obedient, making them the perfect trail runners.
Standard Poodle: Poodles can endure all climates and terrains, and they are energetic enough to keep up with you on even the most challenging trails.

The Furgo Dog Run is the perfect challenge for you and your running buddy. The 1.5 mile run/walk will take place on September 21st, 2021 at Fargodome in Fargo, North Dakota.

Running with the Bears
Running with the Bears is a Boston qualifying marathon and half marathon that allows you to run with your furry friend (but all dogs must be on a leash and wear a soft muzzle). The races will take place on March 12th, 2022 in Chico, California.
